Apple Pie Trifle
Ingredients
For the Caramelised Apples
-
1 tsp Lane’s Apple Pie Seasoning
- 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Pink Lady), peeled, cored, and slicedÂ
- 3 tbsp butterÂ
- 2 tbsp brown sugarÂ
For the Oat Crumble
-
1 tsp Lane’s Apple Pie SeasoningÂ
- 1/2 cup rolled oatsÂ
- 1/4 cup plain flourÂ
- 1/4 cup brown sugarÂ
- 1/4 cup butter, meltedÂ
For the Trifle
-
Lane’s Apple Pie Seasoning, for garnishÂ
- 1 store-bought sponge cake (or use homemade if preferred)Â
- 3 tbsp apple juice (or brandy if desired)Â
- 500ml custard (ready-made or homemade)Â
- 300ml thickened cream, whipped to soft peaksÂ
- 1 tsp vanilla essenceÂ
- 1 tbsp icing sugar, siftedÂ
- Oats for toastingÂ
Directions
Caramelising the Apples
- In a large frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the apple slices, brown sugar, and Lane’s Apple Pie Seasoning.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, for 8–10 minutes, or until the apples are soft and golden, with a caramelised coating.
- Remove from heat and let cool completely.
Making the Oat Crumb
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
- In a bowl, mix together the rolled oats, plain flour, brown sugar, melted butter, and Lane’s Apple Pie Seasoning until the mixture resembles clumps.
- Spread the mixture evenly on the prepared tray and bake for 10–12 minutes, or until golden and crisp.
- Allow to cool completely before using. The crumb will harden as it cools.
Assemble Your Trifle
- In a large glass trifle bowl (or individual serving glasses), layer half of the sponge cake cubes at the bottom.
- Spoon half of the caramelised apples evenly over the sponge layer.
- Pour half of the custard over the apples, spreading it out evenly.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining sponge cake, apples, and custard.
- Gently fold the vanilla essence and icing sugar into the whipped cream.
- Spread the whipped cream over the top of the trifle.
Add your oat crumb to the top and sprinkle with Apple Pie
